Therapy Approaches We Offer

Please reach out to us via the Contact Page if you have questions about the type of therapies offered at Lalonde Psychology

DBT teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, tolerating distress, and building healthier relationships, balancing acceptance with meaningful change. It is one of the most effective treatments for borderline personality disorder, suicidal and self-harming behaviours, emotion dysregulation, and substance use, with adapted versions for children (DBT-C), adolescents (DBT-A), families, couples, and parents.

CBT helps you notice the connections between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and gently shift the patterns that keep you stuck. It is a well-researched, practical approach used to treat anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and many other concerns in children, youth, adults, and couples.

ERP helps you gradually face the thoughts and situations that trigger anxiety while learning to resist the compulsions or avoidance that keep it going. It is the gold-standard treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and is also effective for phobias and related anxiety conditions.

EFT helps you understand, make sense of, and transform difficult emotions rather than avoid them, using emotion as a guide toward healing. It is used with individuals, couples, and families to address depression, relationship distress, trauma, and long-standing emotional pain.

IFS views the mind as made up of different "parts" — protective, wounded, and wise — and helps you build a compassionate relationship with each of them. It is a gentle, non-pathologizing approach used to heal trauma, anxiety, depression, shame, and inner conflict.

Mentalization therapy strengthens your ability to understand your own mind and the minds of others — what you and the people around you are thinking and feeling. It is especially helpful for personality disorders, emotion dysregulation, and relationship difficulties.

ACT helps you make room for difficult thoughts and feelings instead of struggling against them, so you can focus your energy on living according to your values. It is effective for anxiety, depression, chronic stress, and substance use.

Behavioural Activation helps you gradually re-engage with meaningful, rewarding activities, gently reversing the withdrawal and inactivity that depression creates. It is a straightforward, well-researched treatment for depression and low mood.

Mindfulness practices teach you to observe your thoughts, emotions, and body with openness and without judgment, creating space between you and your reactions. It is used to reduce anxiety, stress, depression, and emotional reactivity.

This approach explores how early relationships shape the way you connect with others today, using the safety of the therapy relationship itself as a place for healing. It is used to address attachment wounds, adoption-related concerns, trust difficulties, and recurring relationship patterns.

Play therapy meets children in their natural language — play — allowing them to express feelings and work through difficulties they may not yet have words for. It is used with younger children to address anxiety, behavioural challenges, trauma, and emotional struggles.

Behavioural therapy focuses on changing specific patterns of behaviour through practical, skill-building strategies and positive reinforcement. It is used with children, youth, adults, and couples to address behavioural disorders, anxiety, and habits that interfere with daily life.

Bowen therapy looks at the family as an emotional unit, exploring multigenerational patterns and helping each member stay true to themselves while remaining connected. It is used to improve family relationships, reduce conflict, and break unhelpful cycles passed down through generations.

CPT helps you examine and gently rework the beliefs that trauma has left behind — about safety, trust, blame, and self-worth. It is a leading evidence-based treatment for PTSD and complex trauma.

DBT-PE integrates trauma processing into DBT treatment, first building emotional stability and coping skills, then gently working through traumatic memories. It is designed for people with PTSD alongside suicidal or self-harming behaviours, emotion dysregulation, or borderline personality disorder.

Prolonged Exposure helps you gradually and safely approach trauma-related memories and situations you have been avoiding, so they lose their power over your life. It is a highly effective, well-researched treatment for PTSD, also offered in combination with DBT (DBT-PE) for those who need additional emotional skills first.

Written Exposure Therapy uses structured, guided writing sessions to process traumatic memories in a brief and manageable format. It is an efficient evidence-based treatment for PTSD, often completed in as few as five sessions.

Seeking Safety is a present-focused group therapy that builds coping skills and stability without requiring you to retell painful memories. It is designed for people living with both trauma and substance use, helping them establish safety in their lives, relationships, and emotions.

This comprehensive group teaches the four core DBT skill sets — mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness — in a supportive, structured setting. Groups are offered for individuals, couples, families, teens, and adults, as well as parenting DBT groups based on DBT-C and DBT-A. It is used to help people who struggle with intense emotions, impulsivity, and relationship difficulties build lasting skills for a life worth living.

This group offers a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your relationship with substances alongside others who understand the struggle. It is used to build motivation, coping skills, and connection for people working toward recovery from alcohol or drug use.

Circle of Security is a group program that helps parents understand their child's emotional needs and respond in ways that build secure, lasting attachment. It is used to strengthen the parent-child bond and support confident, connected parenting.

SAGE is a structured couples approach that helps partners slow down conflict, understand each other's emotional worlds, and rebuild connection. It is used with couples experiencing high conflict, disconnection, or communication breakdown.

Grounded in decades of research on what makes relationships succeed, the Gottman Method helps couples deepen friendship, manage conflict constructively, and build shared meaning. It is used to address communication breakdown, recurring arguments, and disconnection.

Based on DBT principles, this approach helps couples caught in cycles of intense arguments and high conflict learn to regulate emotions, communicate clearly, and repair after conflict. It is designed for couples whose disagreements escalate quickly or feel out of control.

Rather than fitting you to a single method, multi-modal therapy thoughtfully draws from several evidence-based approaches to create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and goals. It is used when a flexible, integrative approach best serves complex or overlapping concerns.
