Dr. Marsha Linehan developed Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help people who were suffering from personality disorders, intense interpersonal difficulties, and emotional regulation and who have attempted suicide or engage in self-harming behaviours. Initially developed for people with difficulty handling intense emotions, this therapy focuses on striking a healthy balance between accepting oneself and acknowledging a need for change.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy equips people with valuable skills to cope with and manage difficult emotions or situations, and over time, DBT has been adapted and used to help people with a variety of complex emotional problems, such as those with borderline personality disorder (BPD), people with eating or substance-related disorders, complex and comorbid presentations, anxiety and treatment-resistant depression, and trauma, among many other difficulties. Through more than two decades of scientific research, DBT has been established as a highly effective and evidence-based treatment.

“It is hard to be happy without a life worth living. This is a fundamental tenet of DBT. Of course, all lives are worth living in reality. No life is not worth living. But what is important is that you experience your life as worth living—one that is satisfying, and one that brings happiness.”
