Dr. Carmen Lalonde holds a doctorate in psychology and two master's degrees, one in clinical psychology and one in school psychology. She is registered as a psychologist in Ontario and New York and holds competencies in treating children, adolescents, adults, couples, parents and families. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, where she received extensive training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders, and complex trauma, treating clients across the lifespan. Carmen is not only a clinician but also a trainer of clinicians and a supervisor. She also has a minor in neuropsychological assessment and extensive experience in providing comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessments for individuals of all ages experiencing complex difficulties in learning, attention, behaviour, social-emotional functioning, personality, autism, and trauma. Carmen's clinical experience spans direct therapy in both outpatient and inpatient settings, community clinics, schools, foster care agencies, consultation and supervision of clinicians, research clinics, and teaching clinical psychology students at the graduate level.
Carmen is a proponent of third-wave therapies and primarily works within a DBT framework. She strongly believes in using a relational and behavioural approach to deliver evidence-based interventions that are client-focused and embedded in culturally affirming care. Carmen is intensively trained in implementing DBT across the lifespan and is board-certified through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. She is intensively trained in providing DBT-C, DBT-A, Standard DBT for Adults, DBT for couples and families, DBT-PE for trauma and DBT-SUD for substance use disorders. In addition to her extensive training in DBT, Carmen also has extensive training and experience in other forms of interventions, including but not limited to Emotion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, ACT, Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-based approaches, Trauma-informed approaches, and relational, attachment-focused interventions as well as mentalization-based interventions. Given her training across theoretical orientations and the lifespan, Carmen has developed a keen understanding of how early relationships interact with environmental and behavioural experiences to influence development and shape personality and functioning. Carmen is compassionate and warm and believes strongly in working collaboratively with her clients to increase their resilience and skills to build meaningful lives. She is also deeply committed to advocacy and providing affirming care to the LGBTQ community.
In her free time, Carmen enjoys spending time with her partner and their cat Peppa (she is an animal lover), composing music, working out walking and drinking delicious coffee.
